The breathtaking landscapes of the Atacama Desert surround a region that has a world-renowned cultural heritage and archeological value. The desert environment will offer us inspiration for capturing new perspectives of this unique place on Earth.

In one day, we can easily practice different fields of photography, such as landscape, wildlife, cultural, and night photography.   

This photo tour is carefully designed to make the most of each day, together with creating the most amount of photo opportunities for each participant.

ATACAMA DESERT
PHOTO TOUR PROGRAM

The Atacama Desert Photo Tour starts upon arrival at Calama’s airport, from here we will start our journey to the village of San Pedro de Atacama.

During the following six days, we will be exploring locations with incredible landscapes and an inspiring cultural heritage.

Our focus will be to photograph high plateau lagoons, volcanoes, salt flats, and endemic wildlife. All this surrounded by the spectacular landscape of the Atacama desert.


Atacama Desert Photo Tour Experience.

 

After meeting your private transportation at Calama Airport, you will be transferred to our hotel located in San Pedro de Atacama. Here, you will meet your Photo Tour Leader and fellow photographers at a welcome briefing.

Each day, San Pedro de Atacama is our starting point of all our excursions.

In the afternoon, we will visit the Valley of the Moon, where we will photograph unique geological features, shapes, and textures. 

At sunset, we will witness, from a privileged viewpoint, a spectacle of light, shadows, and colors falling over the world-famous Atacama Desert.

Highlights: Valle de la Luna, Cordillera de la Sal, and San Pedro de Atacama.

Geology, landscape, and local culture.

 

Our second day in the desert will help us to continue our normal acclimation to the high altitude. We will visit interesting geological and cultural spots near San Pedro de Atacama.

In the morning, we will explore off the beaten path locations getting unique perspective and photo opportunities.

Also, we will visit the Rainbow Valley. A colorful spot where we will be amazed by the desert’s geological features. Here, you will train your vision and creativity.

In the afternoon, we will visit the north area of the Atacama salt flat, exploring different lagoons, in search of endemic wildlife, and photographing the captivating desert landscape.

Highlights: Valle del Arcoíris, Río Grande, Salar de Atacama, Chaxa Lagoon, Los Flamencos Natural Reserve.  

Mars-like landscapes and a breathtaking experience.

 

We will visit ‘Salar de Tara’ and ‘Salar de Aguas Calientes’ located on a Natural Reserve. This day will be dedicated to exploring and photographing the geology and the high plateau landscape. Unique rock formations, like the ‘Pacana Monks’ and the ‘Cathedrals of Tara’, will be one of the day’s highlights. 

During this excursion, we will be surprised by the colors of the desert, the contrast of the lights and shadows, together with endemic wildlife encounters.

Highlights: ‘Salar de Tara’, and ‘salar de Aguas Calientes’.

Colorful panoramic views together with the desert’s natural and cultural diversity.

 

From San Pedro, we will drive south to visit ‘Miscanti’ and ‘Miñiques’ lagoon

After visiting the high plain lagoons, we will continue our trip towards ‘Salar de Talar’. In this area, we will find endless photo opportunities to capture the essence of the desert and the immensity if its landscape.  

Highlights: Toconao, Socaire, high plain lagoons, Tuyajto lagoon, Piedras Rojas, and Talar salt flat.

Our day starts with an early raised to visit the famous Tatio Geysers, where we must arrive before the first morning lights. Being one of the highest geyser (14,176 ft), and the third-largest in the world, it’s a great experience to observe the sunrise from this geothermal field.

On our way back from the geysers, we will explore different natural spots in search of wildlife, together with the flora adapted to the high-altitude.  

Highlights: Tatio Geysers, San Pedro de Atacama village. 

Our Atacama Desert Photo Tour has come to an end.

After breakfast, we will visit the Pukara de Quitor and the Tulor settlement. Two places that will contribute to teaching us how was the cultural and human past of this region.

At noon we will be ready to drive from San Pedro to Calama’s airport.

Tour registration policy:

For this Photo Tour applies the following booking policy:

  • A deposit equal to 30% of the total fee is payable upon registration.
  • The balance is payable not later than 90 days before the starting date.
  • Bookings made 90 or fewer days before a scheduled experience are expected to be paid in full at the time of registration.
Cancellation policy:

If at any time, you decide to cancel your booking, we will require you to send us a written request to bookings@creatividadnatural.com. The cancellation will be effective only when you received an acknowledged by Creatividad Natural SpA.

The following are the terms of Creatividad Natural SpA’s cancellation policy:

  • Greater than 90 days before the starting date: loss of deposit.
  • Between 89 and 30 days before the starting date: 50% refund of any payment made. 
  • Less than 30 days before the starting date: No refunds.

This policy and fee terms also apply to any tour extensions, as well as any additional transfers not included in the tour program. 

We strongly recommend the purchase of a trip cancellation insurance to protect yourself.

We generally stay in hotels in the 4-star category. Our preference is to select hotels that reflect the identity of the region we visit, so that with their service, gastronomy, and decoration offer us a local experience. 

Depending on the group size, some hotels of our choice may have limited room available.  

The physical rating for this program is rated as easy to moderate.
 
Location’s specific conditions:

 

In this Photo Tour to the Atacama Desert, most of our hikes are rated easy to moderate, over uneven natural terrain. All guests must be able to walk a minimum of 1,5 miles, which requires walking at high altitude terrains. The terrain elevation range between 8,366 – 14,130 feet above sea level.

We will have different scenic drives, having San Pedro village as a starting and returning point.  

Our Atacama Desert Photo Tour includes a variety of activities, from short hikes to full-day tours at high altitude environments. With the purpose of experience this region to the most, please be prepared for temperature fluctuations between the day and the night, intense sun, and cold temperatures at night.  

Pre trip preparation

 

  • Photo equipment: camera DSLR or mirrorless with manual mode • lenses in the range of wide-angle to telephoto • tripod • neutral density filters • extra batteries • extra memory cards • device to backup images • notebook • backpack for transport equipment.
  • How to dress: consider the desert great temperature contrast between day and night • we recommend light and comfortable clothes during the day, and bring additional layers in the backpack • trekking shoes • during the night and in the early morning we recommend wearing multiple clothing layers • trekking shoes • hat and gloves • sun block.

  • Arrival and departure airport: El Loa International Airport (CJC), Calama – Chile. 
Please arrive in Calama – Chile no later than 1 pm on Day 1, to attend to our welcome briefing.
  • Visa requirements: Visit Visa Map to find out if you will need a visa for entering Chile.
  • Insurance: To book this tour is required an appropriate Medical Evacuation Insurance. A Travel Medical and Trip Cancellation Insurance is optional, but recommended.
